Stevie Wonder visits Norco College
A Message of Hope, Love, and Determination:
An Inspirational Visit by Stevie Wonder
There are defining moments in our lives that can shape or even transform who we are and what we aspire to become. May 25, 2011 was such a day for the students of Norco College’s Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), where we were blessed with a visit by musical legend, Mr. Stevie Wonder. An opportunity to spend the afternoon with an iconic figure whose music and humanitarian efforts transcend every boundary imaginable was truly amazing.
A select group of EOPS students were chosen to share the stage with Stevie Wonder to participate in what was billed “A Conversation with Stevie Wonder: Overcoming Challenges to Achieve the Dream.” In addition to sharing his message of hope, overcoming obstacles, leaning on God, and following one’s passion, he listened to the personal stories of our students. At the conclusion of the dialogue session, Stevie Wonder graciously performed a medley of his famous
hits to a roaring crowd in the college theater.
For EOPS students, who themselves face numerous life challenges on a daily basis, Stevie Wonder’s inspirational words of keeping the dream alive were invaluable. The following are their words of appreciation to Stevie Wonder for sharing such an amazing gift with them.
“I will forever hold on to the words of inspiration that you so kindly shared with us and your life’s testimony…It was truly an unforgettable experience that I will proudly be able to share with many others in order to inspire them the same way I was.”
“It was a most memorable and amazing experience and I will cherish it always…You have given me hope and have always inspired me but given the nature of the intimacy of your visit I take with me your words to heart.”
“I learned so much from you because you are genuine and through all of your trials and tribulations you are still the man that God called you to be…you inspired me to keep hope alive by encouraging us to do what it takes and we will make it…I will live each day dreaming big because you inspired me.”
“Growing up, I heard a lot of your music and to get the chance to not only hear you perform, but to share the same stage was truly a blessing and dream come true. You are a true artist that I not only look up to as a musician, but as a voice against hate and intolerance…what you said truly humbled me and inspired me to do my part to become a better, more humble person, and to not judge others, and to love others.
“Your presence on our campus was both uplifting and exhilarating! I enjoyed most of all seeing the excitement in the eyes of my fellow students as they felt the pride and honor of your visit to our campus…I will continue to carry your inspiring words and the warmth of your conversation spoken to each individual in attendance.”
In one of his signature songs, Stevie Wonder encourages us to:
Hold on to your dream
Cause they’re always worth having
Hold on to your dream
Like a mother to her child
Don’t let anyone ever steal your dreams from you
Hold on to your dream
And do your best to always wear a smile
As evidenced by the words of our students, Stevie Wonder inspired and motivated them to press forward and never lose sight of their dreams.
This amazing day was made possible by the partnership between Inspire Everyone Media Group and EOPS. Mr. Francis Katlego, CEO and Lead Visionary for Inspire Everyone Media Group, spearheaded this opportunity with our program to raise awareness of the extraordinary things that people can accomplish if they discover the inspiration and purpose to do so. We thank Mr. Katlego and his organization for providing our students an opportunity to experience something
that was a defining moment for each of them.
